Stratton Wins Primary, Vows to ‘Fight’ for Illinois Voters
Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has won her primary, vowing to be a "fighter" for voters by addressing their concerns and tackling issues like wealth inequality and immigration reform. She also expressed strong support for abolishing the Senate filibuster to advance legislative priorities.
Stratton Secures Primary Victory, Eyes General Election Battle
Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has won her primary election, setting the stage for a significant general election contest. Fresh off her victory, Stratton declared her intention to be a “fighter” for the voters of Illinois, emphasizing her commitment to addressing the concerns of everyday people. She plans to carry this message of advocacy and responsiveness into the upcoming months of campaigning.
Strategy Focused on Voter Needs and Frustration with Washington
Stratton articulated a clear strategy for the general election, centered on listening to voters and reflecting their priorities. She noted a widespread frustration with the current political climate in Washington and a desire for representatives who will actively champion their constituents’ needs. “They wanted somebody who was not going to sort of set their own agenda, get to Washington and forget who they represented,” Stratton stated. Her approach involves continuous engagement with voters to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed, especially at a time when many are seeking new energy and decisive action from their leaders.
Addressing Wealth Gap and Tax Fairness
When questioned about the financial backing from Governor JB Pritzker, a billionaire, Stratton highlighted their successful partnership over the past seven years in Illinois. She pointed to achievements like raising the minimum wage, protecting reproductive freedom, creating jobs, and advancing clean energy as evidence of their shared commitment to delivering for the people. Addressing the broader issue of wealth inequality, Stratton expressed a focus on practical solutions. “We need to raise wages, how we need to make healthcare more affordable, how we need to give families, working class families and middle class families a tax break and pay for it with a tax increase on those making $1 million or more here in Illinois,” she explained. This stance reflects a belief in a progressive tax system where higher earners contribute proportionally more, aiming to close the wealth gap and make life more affordable for working families.
Call for Abolishing ICE and Reforming Immigration System
Stratton took a firm stance on immigration policy, advocating for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She cited troubling incidents in Chicago, such as the “Operation Midway Blitz,” where individuals, including vendors and daycare providers, were reportedly apprehended without due process. “I’ve made it clear that I don’t think that this agency can be reformed. We need to do something different,” Stratton asserted. She proposed a holistic approach that includes providing pathways to legal citizenship, investing in immigration judges, and bolstering social services and community resources. Stratton believes the current system, particularly ICE operating under the Department of Homeland Security, adopts a punitive lens rather than focusing on support and citizenship pathways. She called for a shift away from criminalizing immigrant neighbors and urged federal agencies like ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to leave American cities.
Support for Abolishing the Filibuster
Looking ahead to potential legislative action, Stratton expressed strong support for abolishing or significantly reforming the Senate filibuster. She believes this procedural change is necessary to overcome legislative gridlock and advance key Democratic priorities. “100%, with the Senate potentially taking the majority? I would absolutely support that,” Stratton stated. She listed protecting reproductive freedom, passing gun legislation, and safeguarding voting rights as critical areas where action has been stalled. Stratton drew a parallel to Illinois, where such measures have been enacted, and expressed a desire to bring this “Illinois Blueprint” to Washington to ensure that people see progress that improves their lives and protects their rights.
Significance of Potential Representation
Stratton acknowledged the historical significance of her potential role as the sixth Black woman to serve in the U.S. Senate. She emphasized the importance of having diverse voices, particularly those with lived experiences like hers, involved in policy-making. “It’s not lost on me that we’ve only had five Black women serve in the United States Senate in history,” Stratton remarked. She sees this as an opportunity to ensure that policy is made “with us and by us.” The prospect of increasing the number of Black women in the Senate, potentially to three, represents a crucial step toward broader representation and ensuring that a wider range of perspectives contributes to national policy. Stratton is eager to bring her unique perspective and lived experience to Washington to advocate for the people she represents.
Looking Ahead
As Juliana Stratton transitions from her primary victory to the general election campaign, her focus remains firmly on connecting with voters and championing their needs. Her clear stances on issues like economic fairness, immigration reform, and legislative procedure, coupled with her historical potential, set the stage for a compelling race. All eyes will be on Illinois as Stratton works to bring her vision of a responsive and action-oriented government to Washington.
