Senator Warns of “Insidious” Online War Betting Dangers
Senator Chris Murphy is warning about the dangers of online prediction markets, where people can bet on government actions and international conflicts. He cited a case where a reporter received death threats over an Iran strike bet. Murphy also criticized the White House as a "grift operation" and expressed concerns about national security leadership.
Senator Murphy Raises Alarms Over Prediction Markets and National Security
Senator Chris Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is sounding the alarm about the growing dangers of online prediction markets, particularly when they involve government actions and international conflicts. In a recent interview, Murphy expressed deep concern over the “insidious” nature of these platforms, where individuals can bet on events like wars and government decisions. He highlighted a disturbing incident where a reporter received death threats after a story about an Iranian strike, which apparently caused financial losses for someone betting on the event on a prediction market.
“Grift Operation” at the White House
Murphy did not hold back in his criticism of the current White House, describing it as a “24-7 grift operation.” He suggested that even if the President himself was unaware of specific fundraising emails, the people he hired were using their proximity to power for personal financial gain. Donations, even those framed as national security briefings, are ultimately going to a “vast Trump consultancy” run by close associates and family members. This, he argued, means that individuals are becoming millionaires through these donations, with a minimal focus on actual national security concerns.
Concerns Over National Security Leadership
The Senator also voiced serious doubts about the government’s ability to protect the nation from terrorist attacks. He pointed to the recent resignation of the head of the National Counterterrorism Center, an individual the President had previously criticized. Murphy stated that the ongoing war has likely increased the threat of terrorist attacks against civilians in the U.S. He also noted that dozens, possibly hundreds, of FBI agents with expertise in counterterrorism have been reassigned or let go, weakening the nation’s ability to track threats.
“I do not feel confident at all in this government’s ability to stop attacks like that,” Senator Murphy stated, questioning the competence of those in high-level national security positions.
“Fringy Gadflies” in Key Roles
Murphy described some individuals in key national security roles as “fringy gadflies.” He specifically mentioned Tulsi Gabbard, whom he characterized as a conspiracy theorist, being involved in tracking intelligence related to individuals who wish to harm the United States. He also brought up Kash Patel, who he claimed cleared out experienced personnel from the FBI when he joined, specifically those tracking domestic threats. This, he believes, has contributed to an uptick in potential terrorist attacks, many targeting Jewish communities, and a reduced ability to track these threats effectively.
Election Integrity and Desperate Measures
The conversation shifted to the President’s legislative priorities, specifically a bill aimed at restricting voting access. Murphy called it a “voter suppression bill” that would create significant logistical hurdles for voters, eliminate mail-in voting, and potentially require married women to present new identification to vote. He believes this bill, which he expects to fail due to lack of Democratic support, is a desperate attempt by the President to change the narrative. With an unpopular war and rising prices, the President, having “run out of traditional paths to win” in the upcoming November elections, is trying to “rig the electorate.” The bill’s provision to transfer voter files to the federal government, Murphy warned, could be used by figures like Stephen Miller to create pretexts for overturning election results.
Banning Bets on Government Actions
The core of the discussion returned to prediction markets. Murphy reiterated his belief that betting on the deaths of others or on wars is “weird and unseemly” and can lead to terrible outcomes. He cited instances of athletes being harassed over lost bets. To address these concerns, Murphy has introduced legislation with Representative Greg Kassar to ban prediction markets from offering bets on government actions. He explained that people close to the President have made bets on events like a war with Iran. This practice is not only unethical, as it allows people to profit from potential loss of life, but it also creates a conflict of interest. Advisors might offer counsel based on personal financial gain rather than what is best for national security.
A Call for Prohibition
Senator Murphy called for a complete prohibition on anyone being able to wager on life, death, famine, or any other national security decision made by the White House. He hopes that lawmakers will recognize the merit in his proposed legislation to prevent such dangerous and unethical practices from continuing.
