What began as a surprise party quickly devolved into a scene of horror when a dangerous prank involving dry ice led to multiple fatalities. The Birthday Celebration Unfolds

On February 28, 2020, Ekaterina Denko, her husband, and eight close friends gathered at a private spa to celebrate her birthday. The rented space included a steam room and a small indoor pool, setting the stage for what was intended to be a memorable event.

A Dangerous Surprise Revealed

As the festivities began, Denko’s husband gathered the guests, excluding her, and they donned white hazardous material suits. This was presented as part of a grand surprise for the birthday girl. Then, the husband wheeled in a large cooler, similar to one used for picnics, and placed it by the pool’s edge.

He opened the cooler, and thick clouds of smoke or steam billowed out. Inside was approximately 55 pounds of dry ice. Dry ice is often used for decorative fog effects because of the dense white gas it produces. The plan was to dump the dry ice into the pool to create a dramatic visual display.

The Deadly Consequences

Dry ice, however, carries significant risks if handled improperly. While the partygoers wore hazmat suits, their use was likely for show rather than actual protection. Denko’s husband and another guest then grabbed the cooler and tipped its contents directly into the pool.

As the dry ice hit the water, it rapidly warmed. This caused a sudden, explosive release of carbon dioxide gas. The gas quickly filled the lower half of the small, poorly ventilated room. The carbon dioxide displaced the oxygen, making it increasingly difficult to breathe.

A Race Against Time

Denko’s husband was the first to jump into the pool, disappearing into the dense fog. Shortly after, two other guests followed him into the water. On the pool deck, the seven remaining guests began to struggle for air. They realized the oxygen was being rapidly depleted.

Fortunately, these seven individuals were able to turn and escape the area before it was too late. They ran out of the pool deck, saving themselves from the toxic atmosphere.

Tragedy Strikes in the Water

Meanwhile, the three people in the pool surfaced, expecting to breathe in fresh air. Instead, they inhaled large amounts of carbon dioxide. The toxic gas overwhelmed two of them, causing them to pass out and die almost immediately.
