Beers Leads Sooners: Fun & Focus for March Madness
Oklahoma’s star center, Raegan Beers, is ready to embrace the excitement and pressure of March Madness. The Sooners are heading into the tournament with a clear mindset: have fun, play free, and compete hard. Beers, a senior leader, is focused on guiding her team, especially the younger players, through the challenges of the NCAA Tournament.
Embracing the Challenge: A Potential Rematch with South Carolina
When the bracket was revealed, many eyes immediately went to Oklahoma’s potential matchup with top-seeded South Carolina. The Sooners famously upset the Gamecocks earlier in the season. Beers acknowledged the excitement but emphasized the need to focus on upcoming games first. “We got games to play though before we get there,” Beers stated. “And so we’re excited for the potential to play them again, but obviously two different very very different teams than we were.” She added that both teams have evolved since their last meeting, making a potential rematch a whole new challenge.
Leadership and Young Talent: The Oklahoma Blend
Beers brings a wealth of experience to the Oklahoma squad. Her leadership is crucial, especially with talented young players like Aaliyah Chavez on the roster. Beers highlighted how senior players like Sahara have helped integrate the younger talent. “Aaliyah has just kind of inserted herself everywhere, which is great in our offense defensively on and off the court and continues to do so,” Beers explained. This blend of veteran presence and youthful energy is a key factor for the Sooners.
The March Madness Mindset: Fun Over Pressure
For Beers, the key to success in March Madness is simple: have fun. She believes that when the team plays freely and enjoys each other, they become a formidable opponent. “We need to go in and have fun. When we play free and when we play fun and we enjoy each other and we compete and we fight, we’re a really good team,” Beers said. She stressed that March Madness, while a high-stakes event, should be an enjoyable experience. This philosophy is especially important for the younger players who might feel the pressure of their first tournament.
Efficient Post Play: A Team Effort
Beers is known for her highly efficient post play, consistently appearing at the top of national statistics. However, she is quick to credit her teammates for her success. “As a post, obviously, I rely a lot on my guards. I can’t do a lot of the things I do unless I get the ball, unless they put me in good positions,” Beers explained. She emphasized the strong communication and growth between herself and the guards this season. “It’s a combination of a lot of things and I can be efficient when my team helps me do that,” she added. This reliance on her teammates shows the strong bond and teamwork within the Sooners.
Experience Meets Inexperience: A Winning Formula
Oklahoma’s roster features a mix of seasoned veterans and players experiencing March Madness for the first time. Beers sees this as a unique strength. “We have a team that’s full of experience. Obviously, Payton is up there, Sahara’s up there. They’ve had a lot of success in the Big 12. Beatatrice is up there, and then you have this group um that maybe doesn’t have a lot of experience,” Beers noted. She believes this combination creates a dynamic where the seniors are reminded of the joy of the game by the freshmen, while the freshmen learn the importance and intensity of the tournament from the upperclassmen. “It makes it so much fun because then the upper classmen are reminded by the freshman how much fun it is and how much fun basketball needs to be,” Beers said. This blend of fresh excitement and seasoned wisdom is what the Sooners hope will carry them deep into the tournament.
“We want to have our fans come enjoy us at Lloyd Noble and so that’s going to be our goal especially for the younger team. There’s not pressure. It’s March Madness. Yes, but it’s supposed to be fun. It’s a sport.”
