Spurs Shock West! Lakers Roll, Rockets Stumble

The San Antonio Spurs are making noise in the Western Conference, grabbing their 50th win of the season by beating the Clippers 119-115. This is the first time the Spurs have hit 50 wins since the 2016-17 season. Victor Wembanyama continues to impress, putting up 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks in the win. San Antonio is on fire, going 18-2 in their last 20 games, the best record in the NBA during that stretch.

Lakers Extend Win Streak to Six

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers are also heating up. They won their sixth straight game, defeating the Houston Rockets 109-92. LeBron James and Austin Reaves showed off with a spectacular alley-oop, and Reaves hit a dagger three-pointer to seal the win. Luka Doncic led the Lakers with 36 points, while Austin Reaves also had a strong showing. The Lakers held the Rockets to just 35 points in the second half, a season low for Houston. This win puts the Lakers a game and a half ahead of the Rockets for the third seed in the West.

Stephen A. Smith Weighs In on Lakers’ Ceiling

Stephen A. Smith believes the Lakers are playing well but still see their ceiling as the Western Conference Semifinals. “I certainly don’t see the Lakers beating any of them if they run into either one of those squads,” Smith said, referring to the top teams like OKC and San Antonio. He acknowledged the Lakers’ recent success, winning their last four games against top-10 teams after struggling earlier in the season. Despite defensive and bench production issues, Smith praised the Lakers’ offense, noting that LeBron James is leading the NBA in fast break points at age 41, and Luka Doncic is shooting over 40% from three-point range.

Rockets Face Major Questions

The Houston Rockets are facing a different kind of challenge. After a strong start to the season, they’ve stumbled, losing to the Lakers. Kendrick Perkins pointed out the Rockets’ lack of toughness and leadership, questioning who steps up in the locker room. “When you look at a guy like Dillon Brooks and what he brought to the table, that culture, their identity, every single night they was going to play with a sense of tenacity, especially on the defensive side, that thing that is gone,” Perkins stated. He also criticized the team’s basketball IQ, especially in the fourth quarter, and highlighted their lack of a true point guard to structure their offense.

Durant Takes Blame, But Team Struggles Continue

Kevin Durant took responsibility for the Rockets’ loss, saying, “I am the offense.” He had 2 points on 4-of-16 shooting in the second half, with six turnovers. However, Stephen A. Smith argued that the team’s issues go beyond one bad half from Durant. “I think they’ve hit their ceiling because they don’t have a point guard,” Smith explained. He believes a player like Chris Paul could have provided the floor generalship the Rockets desperately need, especially heading into the postseason where the game slows down.

Spurs Emerge as Title Contenders?

The conversation then shifted to the Spurs’ legitimacy as title contenders. Stephen A. Smith feels they’ve already proven themselves. “Nothing. Nothing at all. I think they’re there now,” he declared. He praised their talent, defense, and coaching under Coach Wembanyama. “This kid is doing one hell of a job coaching,” Smith said of Coach Wembanyama. The Spurs have the best record in the NBA since February 1st, leading in offensive rating, net rating, and effective field goal percentage.

Perkins Guarantees Spurs Championship

Kendrick Perkins went a step further, guaranteeing a Spurs NBA championship this year. “The San Antonio Spurs are going to win the NBA championship this year,” Perkins boldly stated. He believes their home-court advantage and the emergence of key players like Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and the veteran experience of Harrison Barnes and De’Aaron Fox make them a formidable force. Perkins highlighted the team’s ability to play “agendree basketball,” meaning they don’t rely on just one player each night.

OKC Thunder Still a Threat

Despite Perkins’ bold prediction, Stephen A. Smith still has faith in the Oklahoma City Thunder, especially if Jaylen Williams returns. He believes OKC has the reigning MVP and Finals MVP in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and has the experience to make another deep playoff run. Smith sees the Spurs going deep into the Western Conference Finals but predicts OKC will ultimately win the series and advance to the NBA Finals.
