UAE Faces Iran’s Attacks: Defense Strong, Escalation Avoided
The UAE is facing drone and missile attacks from Iran, testing its advanced air defense systems. Ambassador Ahmed Alatar asserts the UAE is prepared and its defenses are effective, despite disruptions. He stresses the nation's commitment to de-escalation and rejects any form of coercion or blackmail.
UAE Under Fire: Glamourous Image Tarnished by Drone Attacks
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), known for its towering skyscrapers and bustling airports, finds itself in a war zone. Drone and missile attacks from Iran have disrupted operations at a major airport and a vital seaport. These attacks have made the UAE the hardest-hit nation among the Gulf states, raising questions about its vulnerability.
UAE’s Defense: Prepared and Capable
Ambassador Ahmed Alatar, speaking to DW News, emphasized the UAE’s preparedness. “The UAE has been preparing obviously for a scenario like this for a long time,” he stated. The nation boasts one of the world’s most comprehensive air defense systems. Alatar highlighted that the impact of the attacks has been minimal compared to other regions. “This goes to the investment that the UAE has made in defending its local population and its residents,” he added.
Assessing Defense Effectiveness
Despite the defense system’s success, recent events saw a major airport and the port of Fujeirah temporarily suspend operations. When asked if this indicated gaps in defense, Alatar responded, “Judging by our system, there are no gaps. It’s actually been airtight compared to a lot of other systems which have been deployed globally.” He stressed that life continues as normal for residents, with the government remaining vigilant and proactive.
UAE’s Stance on Retaliation
The question of taking the fight back to Iran was directly addressed by Ambassador Alatar. “Escalation for the sake of escalation is not in our DNA,” he explained. The UAE prioritizes de-escalation and has repeatedly shown goodwill towards Iran. He contrasted the UAE’s commitment to defense with what he described as the other side’s lack of commitment to their own country’s defense.
Potential Sanctions and Message to Iran
When questioned about freezing Iranian assets in the UAE, Alatar remained measured. “We reserve the right to defend ourselves and take any and all necessary procedures to defend our people, our country,” he said. He indicated that any actions taken would be visible when the UAE wished them to be. He also condemned the targeting of civilian areas, calling it a war crime. “It will not achieve any goals. The UAE will not be compelled to do any action based on that,” he stated regarding the attacks.
Iran’s Motivations: No Clear Strategy
Ambassador Alatar expressed concern over Iran’s actions, suggesting a lack of clear strategy. “I think there’s no strategy because hitting the UAE implies that there is no strategy,” he commented. He dismissed the idea that Iran is acting on behalf of Palestine, noting that an Iranian national was injured in a recent attack. “We don’t give in to blackmail and coercion. Not now, not never,” Alatar declared, emphasizing that the attacks push the UAE further away from considering any mediation.
UAE’s Support for Peace and Stability
The UAE’s primary goal is peace and stability to focus on its economic objectives. “We support peace. We support a resolution to this conflict,” Alatar affirmed. The UAE does not seek regime change in other countries but desires a change in behavior, specifically to stop being a target. “We want a change of behavior towards us,” he stated.
Regional Cooperation and Future Alliances
Regarding the possibility of a “Gulf NATO” style alliance, Alatar acknowledged ongoing cooperation among Gulf states. “Cooperation between the Gulf States has always been present and active,” he said. He emphasized that the UAE is not anti-any country but is pro-economic management and trade partnerships. He also noted that all GCC members face the same threats, fostering collaboration.
Addressing Misinformation and Future Outlook
On reports of Russian involvement, Alatar urged verification of information. “Let’s clarify first the facts before we go down that rabbit hole,” he advised. The UAE’s focus remains on de-escalation and achieving its economic goals. The nation aims to be a proactive player in the global economy, emphasizing that stability is key to its prosperity.
