Beers Leads Sooners into NCAA Tournament Hosting Duties
As the confetti settles from Selection Sunday and the brackets are unveiled, the Oklahoma Sooners are gearing up for another deep NCAA Tournament run, this time with the coveted home-court advantage. Leading the charge is senior center and Wooden Award finalist Raegan Beers, who radiated excitement and focus as she previewed the team’s upcoming campaign.
March Madness: A Senior’s Perspective
For Beers, a seasoned veteran who has navigated the pressures of the NCAA Tournament before, the message to her teammates is clear: “Have fun.” As she embarks on what could be her final collegiate games, she emphasizes the fleeting nature of this experience.
“It’s March Madness. You only get to do this hopefully four times, maybe five, depending on what your path looks like. Um, but have fun. Enjoy it.”
The Sooners’ status as a host site adds an extra layer of significance to this year’s tournament. It’s the second consecutive year Oklahoma has earned the right to host, a feat not achieved in program history since the 2001-2002 seasons. For Beers, playing potentially her last collegiate games in front of the passionate Norman crowd is a prospect she relishes.
“Everyone this time in March wants to play on their home court, wants to play in front of their fans, and I have loved playing in front of our Norman fans,” Beers stated. “So, I’m hoping they all come out for our last game, maybe two games.”
Guiding the Next Generation: Advice for Freshman Phenom
This year’s Oklahoma squad features a dynamic blend of experience and burgeoning talent, highlighted by freshman sensation Aaliyah Chavez. Named ESPN’s Freshman of the Year, Chavez has enjoyed a stellar debut season. Beers, who herself was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year during her time at Oregon State, understands the unique pressures that come with such accolades, especially heading into the high-stakes environment of the NCAA Tournament.
“When you get awards like that, it’s really easy to think that you have all of a sudden this sort of pressure on you to do so well, to perform well, to do what’s best for your team or else bad things are going to happen,” Beers explained. Her advice to Chavez is to embrace a free-flowing style of play that has already proven so effective.
“So, it’s going to be really important for Aaliyah um to just go in and play free cuz when she plays free, she is so good and she leads our team great.”
Beers also highlighted the contributions of the team’s point guards, Chavez and Zavan, noting their significant impact throughout the season. She urged them to continue playing with that same carefree abandon, reminding them that the essence of basketball lies in enjoyment, not solely in the validation of awards.
Scouting the Opposition and Tournament Outlook
The immediate focus for the Sooners is their first-round matchup against Idaho on Friday. Beers confirmed that extensive scouting is underway, underscoring the team’s preparation and respect for their opponents.
“We know the path that’s ahead of us now. So, we’re obviously doing a lot um of scouting because we know need to know Idaho obviously coming up on Friday and so getting ready for that game. Super exciting,” Beers said.
As a Wooden Award finalist, Beers is undoubtedly a focal point for opposing defenses. However, her leadership and the emergence of players like Chavez suggest that Oklahoma possesses the depth and talent to make a significant impact in this year’s tournament. The combination of veteran poise, freshman brilliance, and the energy of playing on their home floor positions the Sooners as a formidable contender as they begin their quest for a national championship.
