Yukon Favored to Repeat as NCAA Champs
Andraya Carter of ESPN's 'Get Up' predicts UConn's undefeated run will culminate in another national championship. While UCLA is identified as a potential challenger, Carter believes the Huskies' star power and consistent depth are unmatched.
Yukon Poised for Dominant NCAA Title Defense
The stage is set, the brackets are busted, and the undisputed favorite has emerged. As the NCAA Women’s Tournament gets underway, all eyes are on the UConn Huskies, the lone undefeated team in college basketball, who are being pegged as the overwhelming favorites to repeat as national champions. DraftKings has them listed at -265, a clear indicator of their dominance and the perceived gap between them and the rest of the field.
Andraya Carter Predicts Yukon’s Reign Continues
Speaking on ESPN’s ‘Get Up,’ lead analyst Andraya Carter didn’t mince words, declaring, “Yes, Peter, we are. And we are looking at UConn winning another national championship.” Carter points to the legendary coaching of Geno Auriemma, who has already guided the Huskies to an astounding 24 Final Fours, 12 national titles, and six undefeated seasons. “Go ahead and add one to all of those numbers,” Carter stated confidently.
Star Power and Consistent Depth Fuel UConn’s Charge
The Huskies’ strength, according to Carter, lies not only in their star power but also in the consistent execution of their supporting cast. “To me, this is the best team that has the best player,” Carter explained, highlighting the versatility of Sarah Strong. “Sarah Strong’s versatility and the way Geno Auriemma can put her in so many different positions on the floor for this team to be effective with a FUD and the sharpshooter that she is.” Beyond Strong, Carter also lauded the contributions of KK Arnold and the overall team chemistry. “It’s not just those two. We see KK Arnold here. To me, UConn has superstars, but it’s the consistency of the pieces around them and everyone being a star in their role. Again, consistently offensively and defensively, the way they play together as a team. To me, I don’t see anyone touching UConn in this tournament.”
UCLA: The Dark Horse Contender?
While UConn stands tall, Carter did identify a potential challenger: UCLA. The Bruins, who met UConn in a dramatic Final Four last year, are seen as a team with the potential to spoil the Huskies’ quest. “If I had to pick a team, my eye is on UCLA,” Carter admitted, acknowledging that a rematch in the national championship game is a possibility. Last year’s matchup saw UCLA’s Lauren Betts shine with over 20 points, but a lack of consistent scoring from her teammates proved to be their undoing.
UCLA’s Enhanced Supporting Cast
This season, however, UCLA appears to have bolstered their roster. “The difference in UCLA this season, they have better pieces around Lauren Betts,” Carter noted. The additions of sharpshooter Nepkins and playmaker Ledger Walker, who can allow Kiki Rice to play off the ball, have added much-needed depth and consistency. The Bruins’ undefeated 18-0 record in the tough Big Ten conference, and their potential feeling of being snubbed from a No. 1 overall seed, could serve as significant motivational fuel.
Must-Watch Talent in the NCAA Tournament
For fans looking to tune into the women’s tournament, Carter highlighted three players who are absolute must-watches:
- Sarah Strong (UConn): Described as a “pro playing college basketball,” Strong is putting up historic numbers, nearing a 60-40-90 season. Her scoring ability at all three levels, her signature one-foot turnaround fadeaway, and her impressive 135 assists showcase her complete game. “She is so much fun to watch,” Carter enthused.
- Michaela Blakes (Vanderbilt): A high-volume shooter and scorer, Blakes averaged an incredible 27 points per game, which rose to 30 points in SEC play. Her offensive prowess is crucial for a Vanderbilt team led by former UConn standout and coach Shay Ralph.
- Cody McMahon (Ole Miss): A 6-foot point forward, McMahon is a tough, physical player who has significantly boosted her WNBA draft stock this season. Averaging 20 points per game and capable of scoring 30, she is the engine driving Ole Miss’s potential upsets. “She is a dominant player who can take over games,” Carter stated.
Final Four Predictions and Championship Pick
When pressed for her Final Four picks, Carter confidently selected the four No. 1 overall seeds: UConn, South Carolina, UCLA, and Texas. “I am going to go with the number one overall seeds all making it to the final four,” she said. These teams, who were also the Final Four participants last season, are in different parts of the bracket, setting up potential rematches in Phoenix.
Ultimately, Carter’s championship pick remains with the undefeated Huskies. “I’ve got UConn winning it all for all the reasons that I listed earlier. To me, they have the best player. They have the most options, the most versatile lineups that they can use on both ends of the floor. I’ve got UConn winning it.” The narrative of Goliath (UConn) facing off against various Davids poised to knock them down sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting and compelling NCAA Women’s Tournament.
