UConn’s Azzi Fudd: Mindset Unchanged for March Madness
UConn's Azzi Fudd reveals the Huskies' consistent mindset heading into March Madness as the No. 1 overall seed. Despite an undefeated regular season, the team remains focused on preparation and execution, with coach Geno Auriemma emphasizing rebounding.
UConn’s Fudd: ‘Our Mindset Doesn’t Change’ for March Madness
As the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, affectionately known as March Madness, looms, the UConn Huskies have secured the coveted No. 1 overall seed. Amidst speculation that UCLA might have challenged for the top spot, UConn star Azzi Fudd emphasized that the team’s internal focus remains unwavering as they head into the biggest dance of the season.
The Significance of the Top Seed
When asked about the importance of being the No. 1 overall seed, Fudd downplayed the external validation. “Yeah, I mean, we don’t really have a say in what seat we are,” she stated on SportsCenter. “So I think our mindset is we’re just excited. You know, it was really exciting to see who was in our bracket and we’re ready.” This pragmatic approach highlights a team that is more concerned with their performance on the court than their placement in the bracket.
Consistency is Key: UConn’s March Approach
This marks the 10th time in program history that UConn enters the tournament with an unblemished record, a remarkable feat of sustained excellence. However, for Fudd and her current teammates, it’s their first taste of this undefeated March run. The question on many minds is whether the stakes of the NCAA Tournament necessitate a shift in approach compared to the regular season or even conference tournaments. Fudd was quick to dispel any notion of a change.
“Yeah. I mean, I think what’s special about us is we treat every single game um the exact same,” Fudd explained. “Our preparation, our mindset, how we go into the game. So, I think what’s special about this program and how Yukon handles March is that like we handle it the same. We come ready, we know how to handle March. Our coaches are the best. They know how to prepare us and get us ready, but our mindset doesn’t stay doesn’t change. It stays the same and our preparation stays the same. So, we’re consistent.” This consistent philosophy, instilled by a legendary coaching staff, is a hallmark of UConn’s success and a key reason for their perennial contention.
Coach’s High Standards: The Rebounding Imperative
Even with an undefeated record, UConn’s head coach, Geno Auriemma, is renowned for his demanding nature and critical eye. Fudd revealed that even for a team playing at such a high level, there’s always room for improvement. When pressed on what aspect Coach Auriemma most frequently emphasizes, Fudd pointed to a fundamental area of the game.
“Rebounding,” Fudd said when asked what the coach harps on. “Wait, on me specifically?” she playfully inquired, before clarifying, “The team. The team right now. I think rebounding is a big one.”
When asked for specifics, she elaborated, “Just that we need to get more. We need to have offensive, defensive, we need to crash the boards harder.” This focus on rebounding underscores the meticulous attention to detail that defines UConn’s program, even when seemingly dominant.
Balancing Act: Academics and Athletics
Beyond the hardwood, Fudd, like many elite student-athletes, navigates the significant pressures of maintaining high academic standards alongside a demanding basketball schedule. She acknowledged that time management is a considerable challenge, particularly with the constant demands of travel and competition.
“Oo. Um, I mean, time management’s a hard one just with the busy schedule,” Fudd admitted. “But I feel like Yukon, our academic adviserss, everyone sets us up to be successful.” She further described the internal struggle between wanting to hone her skills in the gym and fulfilling her academic obligations: “Yeah, I don’t know. I feel like that like it’s so easy to get trying to do extra get well get extra shots up, stay in the gym, and it’s like, no, I got to go finish this paper.” This “fun balance,” as she termed it, is a testament to her dedication and the supportive environment at UConn.
Evolving Huskies: A Different Team This Year?
Comparing this year’s squad to the championship-winning team from the previous season, Fudd highlighted key differences. “Yeah, I think the pieces that we’ve added this year and just the confidence individually each person has come into this year and continued and just grown,” she observed. “I feel like as individuals, each person has grown and as a team, we’re just coming in on a different level.” This suggests a team that has not only maintained its high level of play but has also evolved, with individual players showing significant growth and contributing to a more potent collective unit.
Looking Ahead: Mission Accomplished?
As Fudd concluded her appearance on SportsCenter, the message was clear: UConn is prepared, focused, and ready to embark on their March Madness journey. The team’s consistent mindset, combined with their individual growth and the guidance of their esteemed coaching staff, positions them as formidable contenders. Fudd’s final remarks echoed the team’s objective: “It’s just another game for you. So, keep uh completing the mission.” With the No. 1 overall seed secured, the Huskies are poised to once again make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, aiming to add another championship to their storied program.
