Fluffy to Fit: Gabriel Iglesias Tackles 440lb Past
Gabriel Iglesias reveals he once weighed 440lbs and has since lost over 100lbs. The comedian discusses his journey with weight, panic attacks, and the help he received from Diamond Dallas Page in his quest for a healthier lifestyle.
Gabriel Iglesias Opens Up About Past Weight Struggles, Hits 100lb Milestone
Comedian Gabriel Iglesias, known affectionately as ‘Fluffy,’ is embarking on a significant personal journey, aiming to shed pounds and reclaim his health. In a candid conversation on Club Shay Shay, Iglesias revealed he once tipped the scales at a staggering 440 pounds and has since lost over 100 pounds, currently weighing in around 320 pounds. With his 50th birthday on the horizon, Iglesias is determined to prioritize his personal well-being after achieving numerous career milestones.
From Big Kid to Big Star
Iglesias has been open about his lifelong struggle with weight, admitting he was “always a big kid.” The demands of his burgeoning comedy career, which often involved late nights and frequent travel, led to a lifestyle where eating out became the norm. “I didn’t cook at all for like 3 years,” Iglesias recalled, explaining how his demanding schedule meant starting his day late and often eating after midnight before sleeping in. This nocturnal lifestyle and constant travel also contributed to his weight gain.
The Turning Point: Panic Attacks and a Health Scare
While his weight didn’t immediately impact his physical functionality in his younger days, Iglesias hit a critical point in his late 20s, pushing 450 pounds. The comedian described experiencing severe panic attacks that left him struggling to breathe, often forcing him outside in extreme weather conditions just to cope. He recounted a particularly harrowing experience in Washington D.C. during a sinus infection, where a panic attack left him shirtless in the snow, a moment that deeply affected him and served as a wake-up call.
“It became uncomfortable where I started getting panic attacks,” Iglesias shared. “I would wake up and I’m just like, I can’t breathe right. I don’t feel good. And I’d stand up and I just I’d have to go outside.”
DDP’s Intervention: A Life-Changing Program
Seeking a change, Iglesias turned to wrestling legend Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) and his renowned fitness program. After meeting DDP at a podcast interview with the late Roddy Piper, Iglesias expressed interest in the program. DDP’s consistent support and daily check-ins were instrumental in Iglesias’s transformation. “He helped me to lose almost 100 pounds,” Iglesias stated, crediting DDP’s program for helping him become more flexible and significantly reducing his weight. This period saw him drop a substantial amount of weight, leading to a plateau that has lasted until recently.
Exploring Options: Gastric Bypass and Medications
The comedian also explored more drastic measures, including a consultation for gastric bypass surgery. However, the requirement to lose a significant amount of weight beforehand presented a Catch-22. “If I can lose 50 lbs, then I can lose 100 pounds. I don’t need this,” he explained.
Iglesias also experimented with weight loss medications like Ozempic. While acknowledging its effectiveness in curbing appetite, he noted a significant drawback: muscle loss. “The problem with Ozempic is you’re going to lose more muscle than fat,” he explained, concerned about the impact on his strength and physique.
A New Chapter: Health as the Top Priority
Now, at 320 pounds and with a goal to get under 300, Gabriel Iglesias is focused on a sustainable path to a healthier lifestyle. He recognizes that while his career has been immensely successful, his personal health is a goal he can no longer afford to postpone. The comedian’s openness about his journey, from hitting a peak weight of 440 pounds to shedding over 100 pounds and now aiming for a new target, inspires many to confront their own health challenges head-on.
“I’ve managed to accomplish every goal I’ve set for myself in my career. Yes. But personally in my regular personal life, there’s so many things that I’ve I’ve not accomplished that I would like to,” Iglesias admitted. “And one of them is in fact getting, you know, to a to a healthier weight.”
His commitment to health, coupled with the support of programs and individuals like DDP, signals a new and determined phase for the beloved comedian.
