Kyiv, Ukraine – A high-level German parliamentary delegation, led by the President of the Bundestag, arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit, reaffirming Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing war of aggression. The visit, which included meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other senior officials, underscored the deepening ties between the two nations and addressed critical areas of cooperation, including military aid, energy security, and Ukraine’s aspirations for European Union membership.

“We are grateful for your support for the resolution of February 25th of this year that was adopted by the Bundustag. Thank you for your personal support. It is very important to us. You have supported Ukraine throughout the entire period of aggression throughout all these years,” President Zelenskyy stated, acknowledging Germany’s commitment.

The Ukrainian President also pointed to Germany’s vital role in providing energy support during a challenging winter and its advocacy for Ukraine’s path toward the European Union. The significant financial package of 90 billion euros allocated by Germany to bolster Ukraine’s fight for independence was also a key point of discussion.

Germany’s Commitment to Ukraine’s Security

The President of the German Bundestag, in turn, conveyed a strong message of solidarity, assuring Ukraine that Germany remains committed to its cause. She emphasized that the world’s attention, while sometimes diverted, must not forget Ukraine’s struggle, which she described as a fight for broader European values.

“While the world is looking toward Iran, we Germans are looking toward Ukraine. We have not forgotten you. And that is why I came here very deliberately this time to say clearly that in the fifth year of this war, this war of aggression in which you find yourselves, we are not growing tired and we must continue to pay attention to how you are doing,” the Bundestag President declared.

She reiterated that the conflict is not merely Ukraine’s alone but a struggle for territorial integrity, self-determination, and democracy, issues that also affect Germany and other European nations. Germany’s position as the largest absolute financial and humanitarian supporter of Ukraine was highlighted, along with active parliamentary cooperation.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The discussions between the German delegation and Ukrainian leadership focused on several critical areas:

• Security Guarantees: Ukraine is seeking formal parliamentary support from Germany for security guarantees post-war. This initiative, part of a broader declaration by a “coalition of the willing,” aims to solidify long-term security arrangements for Ukraine.
• Financial and Military Aid: Ongoing financial support is crucial for Ukraine’s defense efforts, including the procurement of vital air defense systems like Patriot missiles. The “Pearl” program, which facilitates these acquisitions, was mentioned as a key mechanism.

“In my view, if sanctions are lifted, this means that we are recognizing the legitimacy of this aggression. It means that one state or another is forgiving Russia for this crime,” she asserted.

They noted that while restoring the technical possibility of transit might take a couple of months, repairing destroyed infrastructure would require significantly more time and resources. The arrival of a Hungarian delegation was also addressed, with Ukrainian officials stating it was considered a “private trip” and not an official invitation.
